Installing Gdesklets
This howto is about installing gdesklets and helps install one really neat launcher. It looks and acts somewhat like the OSX launcher and is called 'Starter Bar'.
Step 1. Install Gdesklets
Installing gdesklets is done using yum. The following should get you up and running:
yum install gdesklets
Step 2. Setup Gdesklets to Run at Login
Most users would want gdesklets to automaticlly start when their user logs in. You need to edit the session to do this. Run the following to start the GUI to edit the session:
gnome-session-properties
Goto the 'startup' tab and add in the gdesklets binary.
Add: /usr/bin/gdesklets
Step 3. Download Desired Display/Sensors
You may download whatever you want from the Gdesklet site. This howto covers setting up the Starter Bar launcher. Download the Starter Bar and then start gdesklets (if not already started) to add the launcher you have just downloaded. If needed, use the following command to start gdesklets:
/usr/bin/gdesklets
Step 4. Install the Launcher
Now you must install the launcher. Gdesklets should be in the notification area . Right click it and go to 'Manage desklets'. 'File -> Install Package...' Browse to the location of the downloaded file and click 'Open'. You may also try to 'Install remote package...'. There should be something new under 'toolbar/launcher'. You should now see 'StarterBar'. Double click it to start it and add it to the desktop. You can customize the launcher by right clicking on the laucher and selecting an option from the menu.
Step 5. Customize the Laucher
You can now do things like add a starter (button) by right clicking and selecting 'New starter...'. Another option is to drag existing starters (from the menu, etc.) to the bar. Also, check out the 'Configure desklet' option as it has some neat features to it. Now enjoy! Check the Gdesklet site for other things you might want to add. There is some really neat stuff. There are also other Gdesklet sites... Just do a Google search for them.
